Thread of female nudes I love by women artists. This is by Paula Modherson-Becker. She did it in 1906 and it’s “the first nude self-portrait in western art history”. She wasn’t pregnant when she painted it but, I think, wanted to be. She died a few weeks after giving birth
Amrita Sher-Gil (1913-1931). An avant-garde Indian-Hungarian painter of enormous influence who also died far too young, possibly of a botched abortion
Gwen John (I think 1909 ish?), Welsh artist. Nude self-portraits. I love these, though there is sadness there. I wish she’d completed a full painting
Mequitta Ahuja (born 1976). American artist. Describes her works as “automythogrophy” - referencing how she incorporates myths, legends, and art history references into her works
Louise Bourgeois. So many to choose from. Birth, bodies, domesticity all confronted in strange, unsettling but beautiful ways
And while we are on the topic: My Birth, by Frida Kahlo. Not one you’re likely to see on a tote bag. Madonna owns this painting
