Good morning. Its a busy day today on a number of fronts but I will be trying to make some time to reflect on a key turning point in my life when it comes to Farm Health and Safety - #LensLeg
Despite having been on courses, watched video's meet people who'd had accidents I would say my attitude historically to farm safety very average. In essence it was very similar to so many other in that I would say its important but my actions would often tell a different story
I then attended an @NFUtweets Council meeting and the topic of Health and Safety came up. @woodboroughpark spoke with such passion and genuineness and @PhilLatham used a combination of immense seriousness and dark humour that I couldn't ignore the fact I had got things wrong.
Travelling home from the meeting I phoned both John & Phil & explained how they'd made me feel and I told them as soon as I got home I would start making changes. Being a bit competitive (even with myself) I pledged to make 30 safety improvement on my farm in the next 30 days
As soon as I got home I said to one of our farm workers at the time "We are going to change our attitude to safety and make 30 improvements" To say the response was luke warm was an understatement because apparently we'd struggle to find 3 improvements let alone 30
The only response to this was to say "Well we'll start tomorrow by fixing the handbrake on the Manitou telehandler & see where we go from there". In the end we made more than 30 improvements & each one contributed a little bit to a culture shift.
Today I'll find time to go through each of the changes we made. Some were free, some expensive, some easy, some hard, some took time and some were quick but all had an impact and even if just one person adopts one change it will help contribute to culture change #ComeHomeSafe
