Children's books eight times as likely to feature animal main characters than people of colour https://www.theguardian.com/books/2020/nov/11/childrens-books-eight-times-as-likely-to-feature-animal-main-characters-than-bame-people
Rather than reply to idiots in my mentions, I'll just direct them to Darren Chetty's incredible essay in The Good Immigrant, 'You Can't Do That, Stories Have To Be About White People', which explains brilliantly why inclusion in kids' books is particularly important.
Because this here is the problem. No one has said anything about racism. We're talking about, specifically, representation in children's books. https://twitter.com/JJJJ89993102/status/1326438960785223682?s=20
And just to be clear representation isn’t just for kids of colour. White kids need to have representative and inclusive books too. They need to see us all as equals, as main characters. Inclusion in kids books benefits every child. Not just kids of colour.
Apparently just the very sight of a Black or brown kid in a kids book = the great replacement theory. These guys are jokers.
