Said yesterday I agree with this. But my DMs full of people saying “fed up with all this witch-hunting”. Our private conversations are all similar aren’t they? I have a very woke kid. A good balanced smart person. We speak. I need to accept they think differently. So what to do? https://twitter.com/henrywinter/status/1326415415757721602
The way the world has dealt with this to date is wrong. Rather than open serious discussion and find bridges, the older generations have gone silent. Have given ground at every turn. Serious minds banned from unis, jk Rowling. A zillion examples. We need to start trying to talk.
We “boomers” think this is all youthful naivety. Today’s equivalent of 1968. “Wait till they have kids”. This is an error. They think differently. They don’t like it if I like to call a girl pretty. But at the same time they spend all their life on IG perfecting their best poses.
But this isn’t about complaining. How are we going to solve this? Coz good people are losing their jobs. Good minds are staying silent in fear. Corporates are doing things in the HR dept that are dreadfully wrong. HOW DO WE SOLVE THIS? We need to understand better these kids.
This isn’t 1968. They feel passionately about some things and often correctly so. Lbh, my generation hasn’t done great. The planet is sick and the economy is strangled by debt. They are right to be pissed off. But they are exaggerating? Who is going to show leadership on this?
There is no leadership today. There is only Chamberlain esque appeasement. And the price is paid by whatever poor soul makes a slip that day. And here’s the rub. Do my generation want to pay a price to stubbornly be right, or do we hold our nose to not alienate consumers/audience
Pragmatism dictates the later and thats where we are today. It’s funny; we children of thatcher are accused of being money driven. And we still are, coz to not lose GenZ money, we are letting our wisdom, principles and beliefs die. Better not complain and keep their money.
For me personally, I probably am too fond of edgy jokes. I can adjust since I see they hurt my daughter. But I don’t want to not be able to comment on the beauty of a woman (or man). Or say someone could lose a few pounds. Or think gender fluidity is outlier behaviour.
Who is going to lead on all this? Coz we are heading into thought people. Look at the snp plans for “hate speech”. We are very very close to Fahrenheit451. If we talk we can probably avoid it. We aren’t talking. We are acquiescing.
I say this to my generation. Stop telling me privately how angry you are. How it’s all getting out of hand. That’s way way too easy.
