A bit of a #TeamPacer related rant. It is an issue that I think needs to be given more thought and really looked into, so please bear with me...
One thing that has really disappointed me about the #WomensT20Challenge is the fact that none of the teams seemed to use this opportunity to give the Indian pacers an extended run.
There is so much talk about finding a group of young pacers who can take up the mantle when Jhulan Goswami hangs up her boots, but there is little effort to develop the talent we have in our system.
Yes, we have some really high quality spinners in the mix and it’d be hard to drop any of them, but I think there’s a way to fit in players just like Richa Ghosh was thrust the gloves with a vision to develop that facet of her game.
This was the perfect opportunity for the likes of Pooja Vastrakar, Arundhati Reddy, Manali Dakshini, Meghna Singh to get some overs under the belt in pressure situations. And while it was great to see Manali get a game and bowl well, the others were not so lucky.
There is this constant pressure on pacers in 🇮🇳 to hit the high standards of Goswami the minute they don international colours. This is unrealistic.
We need to give them room to develop, and tournaments like this (and India A) are the perfect platforms.
In the final, a clearly insecure Vastrakar who trundled in with a literal axe over her head (the weight of not wanting to leak runs so she can bowl more than an over), still managed to hit the 114 kmph mark. Imagine if she is able to run in with the freedom to simply bowl!
We can produce the Tayla Vlaemincks & Annabel Sutherlands of our own, without having to gawk at other teams & the riches they have.
We need a long term plan for our quicks. It can no longer be a case of forcing them to sit on the sidelines because we have unrealistic expectations
Just like it is okay for the spinners to go for runs sometimes, it should be okay for the quicks as well.
Maybe we will need to start off by wrapping them with a security blanket, but they will learn to bowl without it, they simply need a chance.
For too long we’ve used seamers as net bowlers, forcing them to bowl from start to finish, but barely giving them any game time. This needs to change if we want to be world beaters, and for that a well-rounded attack is 🔑.There is so much potential, but what we need is a vision.
