I'm certain others have made the point, but the public health reaction to #COVID19 has parallels with that of post-germ theory #tuberculosis in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Both provide examples of sound policy, unsound policy, humane and inhumane responses, pronounced cultural & social change, disproportionate effect on the poor and certain ethnic groups & ingenious insight & daft conspiracy.
Throughout #lockdown, the fortunate few have even embraced the features of the TB sanatorium: rest, time in the outdoors and good nutrition (all that baking). Most lack the financial and job security to benefit from these measures. #BasicIncome could allow more to do so.
Indeed, many sanitaria, such as the Saranac Lake Sanatarium in the Adirondacks had funds to accept poor patients. They served a preventive function by removing the infectious from where they could spread the disease, while also attempting to restore their health.
Saranac Lake also had a triage system, which barred the very ill. This was partly to ensure that the sanatarium remained a place of hope for somewhat healthier patients. Could similar measures provide support to #LongTermCovid sufferers? Rest, good diet, time in nature, hope?
