Adoption is the legal process of transferring parental rights from one parent to another by the High Court of Kenya.

1. Citizenship - You must be a Kenya Citizen. International Adoptions are banned for now in Kenya.

2. You must be at least 25 years but not more than 65 years.
3. You must be at least 21 years or more, older than the child you want to adopt.

4. Gender and Marital Status
(a) A single female applicant can only adopt a baby girl.
(b) A single male applicant can only adopt a boy.
Nevertheless, a single applicant can adopt opposite sex on special circumstances, eg a single mom can adopt a boy and vice versa.

5. Married Couples can adopt a child of any sex. They must however, be married for at least 3 years.

7. You must be free from any criminal records. You will provide a certificate of good conduct to prove this.
8. Health - You will be expected to provide a medical report not older than one year. HIV and urine test must be attached.
Even if you are HIV+ , you can still adopt.
Your doctor Will have to give a report on how you have been doing, eg your CD counts, medication etc.

9. Financial Status - There is no legal law on how much one should earn to adopt. However, proof that you earn a living and can take care of a child is mandatory. Examples, salary slips, bank statement, business licence, or any proof of ownership of assets in your name.
10. You must have a home, can be rented or owner occupied.
