In 1922, Dr. Richard Whiteaker came to LA and built the black owned Dunbar Hospital with a staff full of black doctors. Located at 1395 e. 15th St. The building is demolished now.
1920. An all black union was created to protect artists from those refusing to pay for performance, radios & studios that catered to the all white union, Local 47. So when a black star get a call, it was the Musician Protective Association Local 767 making sure they EAT!
California Eagle, A Black Owned Newspaper founded in 1879, created to protect and preserve LA rich black history that other major publication would early on ignored, AND owner Charlotta Bass was involved in the investment of black LA. Located at 4071-4075 South Central Avenue.
In the 1900s, Dr. John and Dr. Vada Somerville came to the U.S. from Jamaica & were the first black to graduate from USC, Vada was the first black women in california to received a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree.
Dunbar Hotel aka āHotel Somervilleā were built by John & Vada Somerville in 1928. It was built by black contractors, laborers, and craftsmen and financed by members of the community. It was the ONLY major hotel in LA for US. It quickly became the hub of Black LA. The LA Waldorf!
Dunbar also played a big part in the jazz scene on central ave with some of the greatest act performed here like: Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Lionel Hampton, Lena Horne, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, and Nat King Cole.Even Ray Charles stayed here! 4225 S. Central Ave
Golden State Mutual Life Insurance was built in 1928 & was one of the most successful black business in history, whose was basically the investment group for Black LA and made many attempt to own property all over LA, OC, Santa Clarita, Santa Monica OG Spot: 4261 Central Ave.
Open In 1926, Lincoln Theatre, located at 2300 S. Central Ave was the most popular and largest venue that can seat up to 2100 people , hosting movies, plays, and all form of entertainment while being bult like a movie palace. It was also a hub for entertainment in LA.
In 1929, Dr. Curtis King built the Rose Netta Hospital which hosted the first interracial blood bank in 1942. It was said to be an interracial because the employees were black, Mexicans and Japanese. They buried any proof of it existing but i searched the database and founded it!
Elkās Hall. Located at 4016 South Central Avenue, hosting workshops, women social club, hairstyles and fashion show and had their own ballroom! The building was demolished in 1983.
Dootone Records founded by independent music king Dootsie Williams and ended up releasing a series of comedy album for Redd Foxx. Dootone was located at 9512 South Central Ave.
Julian W. Ross Medical Center, another black owned hospital history that was buried that I had to HUNT THE ADDRESS DOWN, it was located at 1828 s. western ave.
Black Owned Bank: Bank Of Finance and Broadway Federal Bank.
