So you want to put an end to the electoral college? Well listen the fuck up.
It will take an amendment to the constitution to do this. That takes a 2/3 majority vote in BOTH houses.

That’s right, I said BOTH. And the Dems do not control the Senate and took losses in the House of Representatives.
Y’all KNOW the GOP isn’t gonna pass this, right? The electoral college benefits them, how else do you think they lost the popular vote and still won the presidency?

Before we even THINK about getting a bill passed, we have to get a Senate majority. That starts with Georgia.
Unfortunately that will not be a 2/3 majority, it will be just enough to pass the other progressive policies we so desperately and tackle other voting rights issues.

After Georgia, we have to look ahead to the 2022 midterms. How many House seats can we pick up? How many Senate seats can we flip?
This is going to take organizing. Two years of voter outreach, of finding grassroots organizations in your home state and supporting them.

I know that many of you live in states you consider too red to change. If GA and AZ cannot show that it’s possible, I don’t know what can.
If you want this you need to believe it’s possible, and we need to pair it with some WORK.

The benefit to this is that in changing the makeup of Congress we are setting ourselves up to get other important legislation passed - a green new deal, a raise in the minimum wage, healthcare, and so much more.
Your work will have big impact.

And yes, we will also have to have sustained lobbying on behalf of an amendment. We will need to get lawmakers on our side.
After the Amendment passes, it must be ratified by 2/3 of our states as well.
You see where this is going right? Luckily, the kind of organizing that puts progressives in Congress helps on the state level.

But now I am going to tell you a very hard truth.
This will not happen in the next four years. And that’s okay.

We designed our Constitution so that while it is amendable, that process is not quick.
It is time to come to terms with a long fight.
I hope that you can see how worth it that fight is.

I hope you understand that the work in fighting for this one thing will bleed into other important work, will position us to make good changes as we walk down the long road to an amendment.
We do a great disservice to those who came before us when we don’t dig in for the long haul. When we dismiss the idea of something because it is hard or will take a long time.
We chose to go to the moon, I think we can do this.
