The Greens are not above the culture that pervades society. The sexism, misogyny and other systemic prejudices seep into progressive circles as simply as they do the workplace. We have to remain vigilant about that, but moralising as though we are removed from it is hypocritical.
In Victoria, ACT, WA and yes in NSW too we have had men in powerful positions abuse women. That's a fact. We have had members abuse women they worked alongside with. We failed them and it took months of work to even begin to address it, that work won't end but we must do it.
To even pretend we have some high ground with which to prosecute other people in the political sphere for their actions we should turn this focus inward. This language sends a message to those amongst our ranks that it's never okay, but political point scoring will undo all of it
Having seen the roadblocks to actually address these issues within the party makes me feel that we have a long road to go before we can stand up there and say we're any different. We can and must do better, because we've lost some amazing activists by failing to do so already
