Ooh boy
1. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011) the most violently emotional British movie ever made. There’s a scene at the end where a character grabs a stairpost and it makes you want to cry.
The Fabulous Baker Boys (1989)
The last time Jeff Bridges showed us he’s our greatest living actor, before he became The Dude forever. He’s mixture of vulnerability and pure venom.
Snatch (2000)
Ideally should be seen in a dorm room at 1 am with your boys. Unearned swagger and posture that works because the jokes are so good. Where have you gone, Dennis Farina?
Real Genius (1985)
The best of the 80s nerd movies, or at least the least sexually predatory. Jocks vs nerds, but the jocks are also nerds and the heroes. Pro STEM without being obnoxious about it, favors a liberal education over specialization. Val invented charisma in this.
Only Angels Have Wings (1939)
The movie Casablanca thinks it is. The first 30 minutes is perhaps the greatest 30 minutes in any film ever, Netflix shows have accomplished less in 2 seasons.
Headhunters (2011)
I came to this movie totally blind, and advise you do the same. So much fun. If you need a description, it’s about a man having the worst day of his life.
Pride & Prejudice (2005)
This is my favorite movie. Because I’m a woman, ok? You happy now?
The Aviator’s Wife (1981)
I love all Rohmer, but this one has stuck with me the most. It’s like Before Sunrise but brutally honest about how much love sucks sometimes
Hot Fuzz (2007)
If it weren’t for one shot I completely hated, I’d call this the perfect movie. Not a frame wrong with it. Easily the funniest. Constructed like a palindrome, but the word makes more sense coming backwards.
The Commitments (1991)
Easily the best movie about an Irish soul band, and maybe the best about Ireland in general. RIP to Alan Parker, who had a way of making you believe there was life happening just outside the frame.
Under the Silver Lake (2018)
Understands us millennials far too well, which is why nobody got it. A24 purposely tanked this for getting too close to the truth. Andrew Garfield deconstructs his aw shucks persona so completely he can never return to it, selfless career sabotage.
Metropolitan (1990)
It’s low budget, stilted, verbose, and rather self interested. In short, highly attractive to yours truly. Very funny, but also good for some December melancholy. Nick Smith is perhaps the greatest character in film, this kicks off the Eigeman miracle 90s run
Dazed and Confused (1993)
One of the more difficult directing jobs I’ve ever seen, the tightrope it has to walk between objectivity and the immediacy of the moment is so hard to pull off. So of course it’s now just a stoner movie. Pearls before swine.
The Mummy (1999)
Apparently there was this whole thread about it, you should look it up.
Burning (2018)
“Korea” isn’t a movie genre, it’s not fair to compare it to other Korean movies like they’re in competition with each other. That being said, Burning is like if Parasite had confidence in itself
Jack Reacher (2012)
Christopher McQuarrie horsetraded his way off from Bryan Singer and Kevin Spacey to Tom Cruise, arguably a lateral move. He also has made the best action movies of the last decade. Give him the keys to Hollywood.
Lawrence of Arabia (1962)
Deeply irritating to be repeatedly told how good a movie is, and then for it to live up to the hype. David Lean is a wizard.
Master and Commander: Far Side of the World (2003)
“I’ve got soul, but I’m not a soldier” the motion picture. Peter Weir is our most spiritual director. No. 1 guys being dudes movie, top 5 movie in general
Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)
2003 was a really good year for boats. Random lines of this have entered my generation’s lingua franca, the Shakespeare of our times. Keira was 17 when she shot this, deeply rude of her.
Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986)
People who hate Ferris are missing the point. He’s a force of nature, like a hurricane, the movie is primarily about the people in his wake. Alan Ruck deserved an Oscar, Mia Sara’s lawyers have told me I’m not allowed to write anymore letters.
His Girl Friday (1940)
First among equals for all the Howard Hawks screwball pictures. Comedy was perfected pretty early in Hollywood, they keep forgetting that in order to keep their jobs.
The Way Way Back (2013) A skin crawlingly accurate look at teen awkwardness, felt so attacked I wanted to leave halfway through. I stayed for the laughs and the general sweetness.
Spirited Away (2001)
So many movies want to be fairy tales, but few actually get faerie logic. Miyazaki understands the danger of a world that, while not hostile, is entirely alien and isn’t patient enough for you to catch up.
24 Hour Party People (2002)
Perhaps its greatest achievement is making us think punk and rave aren’t shit genres. The least self aware 4th wall breaks ever, I mean that as a compliment. Sneaky good film about memory and perspective.
LA Confidential (1997)
It’s like if everyone in the batting lineup gets on base. At first you don’t think much of it, but by the 6th inning you realize you’re witnessing a miracle.
The Wedding Singer (1997)
Drew Barrymore sounding out Mrs. Glen Gulia, not liking how it tastes, then laugh-crying at the cruel cosmic joke when she realizes her name will be Julia Gulia is an all time scene.
The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999)
Sociopathy isn’t a compulsion towards violence, but rather a continuous surprise at what you’re willing to do.
Why did so many of you like the first post, this is going to kill me.
Midnight in Paris (2011)
My second favorite movie of all time. Fun fact, this movie has no director/writer. A film reel was mailed to Sony Classics with no return address. Owen Wilson has no memory of the project, but was happy about the golden globe nomination all the same.
Last of the Mohicans (1992)
Yeah blah blah blah history, at its core this movie is about sex and death and who has the right to people this new world. I hope that someday I’ll be old enough to marry Madeline Stowe.
Almost Famous (2000)
I’m super tired so I’m just going to say this is a good movie and you should watch it. The orignal is good but the director’s cut is life changing. Goodnight.
Movie thread is back on. No one is demanding it, but maybe I don’t do things for you, maybe I like to tweet for myself sometimes ok
The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (2015)
The style IS the substance. It’s weird that this multi million dollar summer blockbuster is a cult classic, but that’s the only way to describe it. I’ve watched its reputation grow like a proud father who shows up 2 years after the birth.
A Serious Man (2009)
The Coen Brothers are the best living directors, so this selection is also representative for my affection for the entire catalog. Not nihilistic like everyone thinks it is, just reminds you that God doesn’t owe you anything. Do your job and trust.
Damsels in Distress (2011)
I showed this to my sister once. When it was over she turned off the tv and went to bed without saying a word to me. That’s either a demerit or high praise, depending on your opinion of my sister.
Beauty and the Beast (1991)
Disney’s greatest accomplishment & it was largely by accident. A triumph by the individuals artists who were forced to work on an insanely accelerated schedule by indifferent executives, who then fought for credit when it turned out to be a masterpiece
Napoleon Dynamite (2004)
Better than its fans. Has an instinct for the hyper specific little moments of life. The way the farmer does a half assed tap on his shirt pocket, feeling for a wallet he knows isn’t there. The rough indignity of blowing your nose on a brown paper towel
Return to Me (2000)
Understands that when you date an ethnic girl, you’re really dating the whole family. One night I got drunk and tweeted at director and costar Bonnie Hunt, telling her she just killed it. She liked the post. Follow your dreams, kids.
Taken (2008)
Historians of this account will remember it was heavily Liam Neeson based in the early years. Why the change? Well I promised God that I’d never watch Taken again if he would help me out of a jam. I don’t even remember what the jam was, but a promise is a promise
Peeping Tom (1960)
It’s amazing how absolutely perverted you can be while showing less gore than an episode of Criminal Minds
The Descendants (2011)
Alexander Payne is one of the few directors that enjoys people. When I was first starting to watch grownup movies, asked my dad to take me to see this. As we left the theater I apologized for the swears. He said “what are you talking about, that was great!”
