FunFact: Georgia was founded on prison reform

James Oglethorpe freed 150ppl from English debtors prison sailed to a coastal bluff where he was welcomed and befriended by Chief Tomochichi. They signed a trade agreement and named the colony after King George

Secretary of State 😁
Chief Tomochichi and his son traveled to England and so amused the court that King George funded the settlement of Yamacraw Bluff.
Tomochichi and Oglethorpe laid out a few roads and squares and named it Savannah

It was a harmonious relationship. Oglethorpe brought families, a doctor, a seamstress, a teacher, a blacksmith, and other skilled workers, but still needed to populate the area and welcomed the Scottish, Irish, Jewish and anyone else who needed a home.
Oglethorpe and Tomochichi became such good friends, that when the chief died, James was a pall bearer and buried him in the city’s first square (now Wrights square) where he still rests.
Oglethorpe was a good man. As the town grew and homes were built, he slept in a tent. He was the founder but let others govern the town although he had final say. He was against slavery, rum, and lawyers. Tomochichi didnt like rum either, said his people were getting shitfaced 😂
Backstory: The reason Oglethorpe freed people was bc his best friend died from disease he got in debtors prison. Oglethorpe thought it unfair that a person should die just bc he was behind on his bills.. so he convinced King to let prisoners go w him to the new colonies.
