It was a harmonious relationship. Oglethorpe brought families, a doctor, a seamstress, a teacher, a blacksmith, and other skilled workers, but still needed to populate the area and welcomed the Scottish, Irish, Jewish and anyone else who needed a home.
Oglethorpe and Tomochichi became such good friends, that when the chief died, James was a pall bearer and buried him in the cityâs first square (now Wrights square) where he still rests.
Oglethorpe was a good man. As the town grew and homes were built, he slept in a tent. He was the founder but let others govern the town although he had final say. He was against slavery, rum, and lawyers. Tomochichi didnt like rum either, said his people were getting shitfaced
