1. People are treating this coup-ishness as Manichean. Either Trump will illegitimately seize power, which is obviously terrible, or Biden will and we can all rest easy.
2. That’s worth worrying about even if the chance is remote because it’s catastrophic. But the coup-ishness can have many many terrible consequences even if Biden does take the oath of office.
3. It can enable a sabotage of the Biden administration, including hampering the Biden admin’s ability response to Covid. People could die. Also foreign policy, economic policy, and so on.
4. Aggrieved Trump supporters could take violent action. There was an attempted kidnapping of a governor and mass shooting at a polling place *before* large numbers of Republicans believed an election was stolen.
5. It could be the pretext for draconian voting rights restrictions.
6. It could give even more popular support to Republican obstruction to Democratic policies and nominees for the sheer sake of obstruction.
