I teach at a school that is predominantly Latinx and when I do report card calls, I typically need a translator. Today, the translator stayed on the line to chat with me after our call.
He said at first he was a little worried when I told him the call was about report cards. Then started telling me about how he translates for oncologists, funeral homes, etc. and those are really tough calls to make
He also told me that PTSD is a real thing for some interpreters because of the type of traumatic information they have to relay to families
I don’t think I had ever considered that before. It was an interesting phone discussion and I really appreciated him taking the time to educate me.
