Before you set that text…have you scanned it?
Scansion is a system of identifying weak and strong syllables in poetry or prose.

Here’s how you do it:

(Example: Tuesdays & Thursdays by Lisa Neher)
⁣(1/5)

Step 1:
Write out your text. Read it out loud. Draw a straight line over stressed syllables or words & a curved line over unstressed syllables or words. Hint: single syllable “connecter” words like articles, pronouns, & helping verbs (among others) are often unstressed.
(2/5)

Step 2:
Compose a rhythmic setting of your text that aligns stressed words and syllables with stressed beats and divisions of the beat.

Step 3:
Compose your melodic line.

(3/5)
When you compose music that takes these natural speech rhythms into account, your vocal music will be
1.Sung easily
2.Rehearsed effectively
3.Understood by the audience

So now, I want you to give this a whirl! Take a line of poetry, scan it, write a rhythm and a short melody for it, and post it in the comments! I can’t wait to hear how this goes for you!
