BREAKING: Mayor London Breed says no more indoor dining in San Francisco because #coronavirus cases have doubled over the last three weeks. She's also pausing the reopening of high schools and reducing capacity at gyms and movie theaters. Elementary & middle schools can proceed.
Mayor warns people to be careful over the holidays and in the cold weather. "The hard choices we make now will help make things better for us in the future. It will get our city open. It will get our businesses open. It will get our kids back in school faster."
All restaurants and bars that serve food in San Francisco must close indoor service starting at midnight Friday. Includes food courts and restaurants in museums and hotels.
Three weeks ago, there were 3.7 cases per 100,000 people in San Francisco and now there are 9 per 100,000. San Francisco is averaging 80 new cases a day, up from 32 cases in early October. Will go up to 300 cases a day by late December if this continues, says Dr. Grant Colfax.
The San Francisco case rate is increasing more quickly than in the summer surge. "It is entirely plausible that we will face a situation where our health care system will become overwhelmed and reverse the current progress that we've made." -- Dr. Colfax.
All schools currently open can continue operating. Elementary and middle schools can continue to seek permission to open from the Department of Public Health. No new high schools can open at this time.
Dr. Colfax warns there could be another shelter-in-place order over the holiday season in San Francisco if we don't flatten the curve again.
Dr. Colfax says non-essential travel including over the holidays is not recommended. Wear face mask and stay six feet apart from people outside your household. Eating & drinking is problematic because masks are removed. "This is not the year to pull together a big holiday table."
