The correlation between bad personal hygiene and mental health/Nerodivergence and gender identity
A thread -
First of all this does NOT apply to everyone who falls into any of the groups above this is from lots of research, personal experince and other’s experiences. Please be kind in the comments.
Also idk if this means anything but i am a trans mentally ill nero divergent person so i have a LOT of experiences in most of these fields 😋
Nero divergence - ADHD
An ADHD mind is constantly seeking stimulation of some kinda, and when it latches on to something stimulating it has a hard time moving from one task to another. When it comes to something like brushing your teeth or taking a shower the ADHD mind finds
that very boring and non stimulating so it won’t compete the task or peolle with ADHD will rush the task. That is why people with ADHD r more likely to have cavity or bad dental hygiene. Also because personal hygiene task are so unstimualting it makes it even harder
to switch from doing something else to getting in the shower or going to the bathroom to brush your teeth.
Nero Divergence - Autism Spectrum
* I am not diagnosed on the autism spectrum but I found this information from my own research online*
It is most common in teens on the autism spectrum to have bad personal hygiene like not taking showers because it can be hard for some to
understand the social need to “be clean”.
Nero Divergence - Sensory Overload
Over sensitivity is common for people on the autism spectrum but also to people with ADHD/ADD other nero disabilities. Personal hygiene task can be extremely overwhelming to highly sensitive people.
To some the texture of a toothbrush or water or the smell of soap and shampoo can cause sensory overload.
Mental health - Depression
For people with depression doing simple mundane task can take an extreme amount of energy and effort. So getting up to brush your teeth or even put on deodorant can be extremly difficult. Most people enjoy shower or baths because it is a place where
they can let there mind be free and wander. But for someone going through depression who might be having negative or intrusive thoughts that can be extremely overwhelming.
Mental Health - Anxiety
Alike to Depression a person with anxiety being left alone with there thoughts can be a scary thing. Also anxiety loves taking mundane activities and adding some form of fear factor. So can you imagine how scary stepping in a bathroom can be to some.
Mental Health - Body Dysphoria
Body dysphoria is extremely common with people with Anxiety/Depression and other mental health issues so cleaning yourself can be extremely anxiety provoking for some.
Gender Dysphoria -
For trans people showering or going into a bathroom can be a nightmare. At times peoples gender/body dysphoria can be so intense they can’t look in mirrors. So it can be draining and painful to take a shower or bath at times too.
I’m sorry if any of this offends or hurts anyone like i said this does not apply to all people in these categories just stuff i have found out and learned about. 🥺
If anyone wants any advice on how to combat some of these issues i’m happy to help :D
