Is the AI tech sector anti-DOD?

I’m excited to announce that after a year of research, we've just released our @CSETGeorgetown paper on this topic. We surveyed AI professionals around the country on their view of the DOD and DOD-funded AI projects.

Here's what we found: 1/?
First, AI talent isn’t a monolith. 39% are neutral, 38% positive, and 24% negative about working on DOD-funded AI projects. These views also change: ppl feel more positively about working on basic research vs applied. Ppl with more DOD-familiarity also felt more positively.
“Interesting problems” are the top benefit of working on DoD-funded AI projects, followed by “access to unique resources,” according to multiple choice question. But in open-text responses, 65% of respondents said the greatest benefit would be the ability to do good.
In terms of downsides of working w/ DOD, “discomfort with use” was the top, followed by paperwork + clearance requirements. 60% said they didn't want to do harm. Our title came from one such quote, which cited supporting "the murderous American war machine" as their top concern.
