Confirmation bias isn't all bad.

Use it to persuade people.

// A THREAD //
It sounds contrary, I know.

The tendency to love info that supports us...

Can help us convince others of something they disagree with?

YUS.
A small part of your brain lights up like a Christmas tree when you read agreeable evidence.

We like to be told we're right.

What this means for persuasion is:

Start with common ground.
The year is 2024.

You're speaking to an extreme Karen climate change denialist.

You wouldn't start with evidence of a human impact.

That's an area of high conflict.
Instead, start with:

Earth's climate changes naturally.

No one in their right mind disagrees with that.
Follow up with evidence of natural climate change.

That small brain region lights up in her mind.

Then you build off it:

2) NCC = A Balanced System

2) NCC doesn't explain everything

3) Emotional stories & evidence of us fucking up the balance
You create common ground.

→ People will listen

You frame this common ground.

→ People will keep listening

You show the failure to uphold the common ground.

→ People will grapple with that
