Yesterday afternoon I sent @AkhilGuptaUCLA and @Liebow4 a formal letter laying out my concerns about the AAA’s handling of multiple Zoombombing incidents in the virtual hallway of #RaisingOurVoices2020. (a thread)
To be clear, it was the AAA's responsibility to create a safe and secure space for conference attendees. It did not. And I appreciate @AkhilGuptaUCLA's public message today accepting responsibility and apologizing.
I also appreciate that rather than focusing only on finding those who shared links with non-registrants, the AAA will now attend to those who suffered the violations of a Zoombombing. Caring for the latter is equally, if not more, important. A lesson for future virtual meetings.
There is still a conversation to be had about power, privilege, and responsibility within the AAA. First the Communities debacle and now this speak to that.
My final duty for ROV was to be on a session on Saturday afternoon with @Liebow4 and others on Sustainability, Accessibility, and the Future of Professional Meetings.
Liebow+AAA staff have agreed to step aside and let that be a safe space to discuss inclusivity, care and responsibility in addition/connection to sustainability and accessibility (of all kinds)—I hope all concerned by the recent events will join us. https://cdmcd.co/WvDgYE
