Gender based violence as we know can affect individuals of both gender and it is violence in any form which can be sexual, physical or even mental. Globally reports have been gathered on violation of the girl child but it also affects the male gender though many people don’t
talk about it. Taking Cameroon as a case study, we see that there are many forms of gender based violence and the act can be done by an individual (like rape,sexual harassment,and domestic violence,customary or traditional practices and many other ways )
or by the state (through job favoritism, education of a particular gender over another,less sits in political positions ). Gender based violence can also be psychological(controlling behaviors, blackmail and coercion)
In most recent reports see that GBV manifests itself now through online platforms whereby many illegal and harmful behaviors against a particular gender are practiced not forgetting hate speech as well.
GBV has both long term and short term consequences which aren’t supposed to be treated lightly and it affects our country as a whole. A few consequences include retarding mental and/or physical health, high rate of unemployment, high illiteracy rate,
Increase in poverty rates and educational imbalance. There are a lot of recommendations I could suggest to eradicate GBV in our community but just to give a few;
Proper sensitization for both genders should be done in areas greatly affected that way the male gender will go a long way to protect the female gender and vice versa. Legal aid should be made readily available and accessible to the victims and survivors
And the perpetuators of this act shouldn’t be left unpunished. This way both genders will feel safe and cared for . In a special way the male gender should be sensitized to speak up and break the silence against the violence that affects them as well.
The internet and other social media platforms should be used to connect survivors to each other and counselors as well. Setting up special training centers for survivors,ending any form of stigma towards them and support them rebuild their lives
If all these measures are put in place the rate of GBV will reduce greatly and everyone will speak with one voice to end it for good
