At some level every question/complaint re: elected Republicans coddling, indulging, or otherwise tiptoeing around the President can be best understood/rephrased in terms of their voters, with whom he has exponentially more credibility.
I say this only to point out that if you're making this exclusively or even primarily about sensitivity to Trump's feelings per se you're missing a yuge part of the plot. He reflects the base id as much as he propels it.
And as bad as he is at pantomiming an affirmative case for conservative ideas, this conspiracy-tinged nexus of grievance, dispossession, and vague but knowing mistrust of institutions writ large is where he thrives, and a big part of what fueled his candidacy in the first place.
