THREAD: I've been closely following protests in Los Angeles since George Floyd's death. Since the end of May, some BLM protesters have evolved from activists in a nationwide movement, to conspiracy theorists and deception artists.
After an organizer from the "Black Unity LA" group was chased out of town for lying about having terminal cancer, the group of protesters that once occupied Grand Park across from City Hall have been ridden with controversy.
Most recently, rumors on social media claimed a blue truck with "Trump stickers" on it had ran over a black man named Gerald Logan while he helped an older person cross the street. Protesters held a vigil quickly after and a CashApp account was being promoted for donations.
But then, the questions started rolling. Activists who claim to be journalists took over the narrative and a conspiracy theory was born. These are screenshots sent to me from a signal thread called "LA Journalists 2"
Vishal Singh - @VPS_Reports , a frequent protester who was recently arrested in DTLA and was close to the Black Unity Camp, claimed to have DMs from the family.
There was no local news about a hit and run, no video from witnesses at the scene and no coroner records for Logan.
When Vishal was questioned about the details, he went on the offensive.
On Twitter, @VPS_Reports publicly attacked those asking questions as well.
What caused the story to change is unclear, but today the activists pushing the narrative posted that Logan was indeed alive and apologized for their false reports.

It is unclear where funds raised ended up, or if they will be returned to donors.
