The National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) has today put out a call to fund evaluations of public health interventions led by or involving the police.

The National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) has today put out a call to fund evaluations of public health interventions led by or involving the police.

The call asks: "What is the effectiveness and cost effectiveness of public health interventions led by or involving the police which impact on population health or health inequalities?" (Crime related outcomes can be included as secondary outcomes.)
The application process is long and rigorous, so the @CollegeofPolice and @PHE_uk are looking at what support we can provide people interested in bidding.
Research colleagues from outside the UK will need to read the terms and conditions to see whether they can apply.

I'm really pleased by the interest in this funding call. Two quick initial thoughts from me...
Bids to evaluate police interventions tend to fall down because:
a) the existing evidence isn't always used to explain the design of the intervention (problem -> solution?)
Bids to evaluate police interventions tend to fall down because:
a) the existing evidence isn't always used to explain the design of the intervention (problem -> solution?)
b) the theory of change, logic model or mechanism - which links the intervention to outcomes - isn't always described clearly or in an evidence-based way (solution -> benefit?).
