If you zoom out from this and look at the Four Freedoms of the EU, it's possible to see just how short sighted this is

Those Four Freedoms:

Free movement of goods
Free movement of capital
Freedom to establish and provide services
Free movement of persons

The Four Freedoms are linked, so it's not possible to cherry pick and have one without another. If you give up free movement of people, you give up the other three.

There has been a basic failure on the part of our elected officials to explain this to people.

As a consequence of giving up freedom of movement of people, the UK is also giving up the freedom of movement of goods.

The result of that is a complicated IT system for customs declarations that won't be working in time and some waterlogged half-finished lorry parks in Kent

The longer-term view of goods movements isn't great and will be ruinous on several industries, not least car manufacture.

It wouldn't be overly impolite to call it a right shitshow.

Freedom of movement of capital is also given up.

In short, the Vote Leave government have failed to explain the compromises necessary for UK citz to lead a comfortable life in a global community.

Unless there is some serious u-turning in the next few weeks, UK citizens are going to be on the front line of the suffering
