Twitter seems to be in love with the idea of working for oneself, even at the cost of making less money & having less freedom.
As someone who made more as an independent consultant than what I make now at AWS — I am *much* happier now than I was then & have more free time.

There are huge trade offs to each. For me the stress & anxiety of working for myself far outweighed the extra money.
I was also working many more hours & saw my family less. I was just less happy. Do what works for you, everyone has different goals & aspirations.

money, look at early employees of many successful startups or even AWS employees where I work that have been here for a while.
They don’t ever have to work another day in their life if they didn’t want to — all accomplished through working at someone’s else’s company.

One day I may try to go back out and start a company for myself — but I am now very aware of the trade offs and will go into it without the illusion that it will be easy, stress free, or that I’ll have any more freedom than I do now.
