some people desperately need to understand the world and they make genuine efforts to do so; it's not just a matter of "interest" or something to do at the weekend house
i resent when ideas are handled at a great remove, as something charming and amusing, in "look at the pandas, darling" tones
it's all deeply anti-intellectual and it reinforces assumptions that knowledge is exclusive & elitist
