Hello, I'm Kellen, a high school senior from Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, and a member of the Trust's Youth Leadership Team. Today I will be taking over the Trust's social media to share a bit about myself and my dedication to historic preservation. #YLT2020
Growing up I always seemed to have had an inherent interest in history, but looking back, my surroundings definitely contributed to my love of the subject. I'm only a few miles away from Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, something I've taken for granted in my development. #YLTTakeover
Living in this area has given me the opportunity to appreciate history all around me. If I grew up elsewhere I'd probably still have the same interests, but Phoenixville has definitely fostered a love of history above all else. #YLTTakeover
I am currently working on a podcast about the Battle of Gettysburg. Gettysburg has always been a favorite spot of mine, I have lots of fond memories exploring and hiking across the battlefield. #YLTtakeover
I'm excited to continue transferring stories from the Battle into a podcast because that media is accessible anywhere there is an internet connection. #YLTTakeover
My goal is to make those who listen feel as though they understand the sacrifices made as well as if they visited in person. Bringing the stories all together is taking a lot of information but luckily I have books, and of course, the internet! #YLTTakeover
It's really hard to name a single historical place that appeals to me above all others, but the city of Boston is a really really strong contender. From Bunker Hill to the U.S.S. Constitution, historically speaking, it feels like Philadelphia on steroids. #YLTTakeover
Apart from its obvious Revolutionary War relevance, Boston itself is great and a wonderful example of heritage mixed with progress. #YLTTakeover
A couple of years back I had no interest in American History. That changed after I went on a tour of Fredericksburg with the late Ed Bearss. The study and preservation of history embodied by him spoke to me and I realized the true value of American Battlefields. #YLTTakeover
It goes without saying that Ed's memory is carried on by the Youth Leadership Team in more than just spirit. #YLTTakeover
I'm in the process of applying to colleges right now, I hope to eventually major in history before later going to law school. Along the way, I intend to be politically active on campuses as well as engage in historic research and preservation advocacy. #YLTTakeover
I encourage you all to take your passion for history into your own hands and look for things that interest you in unorthodox ways. You can often find books and resources online for whatever you're interested in. By following your own curiosity you learn much better. #YLTTakeover
