It’s National Apprenticeship Week! Apprenticeships can play a huge role in an inclusive and equitable economic recovery. A thread for #NAW2020 1/9
Apprenticeships are win-win. Employers get access to a pool of workers with the skills they’re looking for, and apprentices start earning wages from Day 1-a good option for mid-career workers as well as younger adults 2/9
94% of people who complete registered apprenticeships are employed after finishing their program. Apprentices earn average starting pay of more than $70,000 per year. 3/9
Apprenticeship has been growing in recent years but still remains underused in the US, with only a small fraction of people participating—just 0.3%. 4/9
Apprenticeships can provide on-ramps to careers in growing fields like health care, IT, and financial services, but they remain rare in those types of fields. 5/9
We also have work to do to make apprenticeships available and accessible to everyone, including women, people of color, people with disabilities, and returning citizens. 6/9
For example, in 2019 women made up half the labor force but just 9% of active apprentices. 7/9
Ensuring access to child care, transportation assistance, and other wrap-around supports are just some of the steps we can take to help apprentices succeed. 8/9
Our proposal would create networks of apprenticeship hubs in each state, linking employers, workers, and educators. For more info: https://www.thirdway.org/report/apprenticeship-america-an-idea-to-reinvent-postsecondary-skills-for-the-digital-age 9/9
