here's an educational thread about the j!svng situation and why cancel culture is a lot more dangerous than you think;
here's an educational thread about the j!svng situation and why cancel culture is a lot more dangerous than you think;
first off, I'll make it clear right away that I do not agree with the way seph (op in this controversy) has acted towards j!svng - I have seen the video myself and the words and tone used were definitely out of place and not something I condone in any way!
now, do I think this is something to be recieving death threats and being doxxed over? absolutely not.
op clearly did something they have to be held accountable for, but that doesn't give anyone the right to make their life a living hell - mostly even for the wrong reasons

I have seen so much misinformation spread about this, ranging from op wearing only lingerie to the call, all the way to them reading some of their explicit fanfiction to j!svng - all of which is not true. if you want to hold someone accountable, at least do it for things +
they actually did and not for hear-say you stumbled over on twitter.
to sum up the situation:
op called j!svng's voice "sexy" on the vc in a voice unfitting for the situation, then called him "baby" and added he is "like a baby"
op stated beforehand that they would be wearing +

lingerie under their clothing for an extra confidence boost
these are the facts I gathered from my own research about the situation, and you're free to judge those for yourself
my point is: these are the things op should be educated on and held accountable for, no MORE & no LESS.

here's where the cancel culture comes in;
instead of giving them a chance to reflect on their actions, feel remorse for what they did and apologize, everybody was quick to spread (oftentimes false) word about this all over twitter - no censors, nothing.

this
1. caused this whole ordeal to show up in searches and be visible to the members of sk!z
2. took away the opportunity for op to realize their mistake and reflect on it in private before making it "public"

one problem with spreading this like wildfire is linked together with the facts that op owns an nsfw account - these accounts are purposefully hidden from officials and minors by heavy censoring & often also by blocking official accounts - but this made it visible for everyone.
seeing this type of content can cause those sensitive to it to be triggered (hence why it's usually hidden) & lots of minors / sfws picked up on the fact that op is also a fan author in the dark fic community, which was also made a problem.
tw // rape, non-con
op wrote fiction about the above mentioned topics including sk!z - again, something purposely hidden from anyone who might be triggered.
while I do not condone this type of fiction or indulge in it myself, I understand it being a type of coping mechanism +

for people who might have experienced similar things, so take that as you will.
the second problem, though, was spreading this content to where minors/victims could see it when it was usually hidden away via censors and filters (ao3)

this caused an uproar since most (without doing research first) saw this type of fiction some sort of kink/fantasy instead of a way of coping, & immediatly assumed the worst about the author - but understandabley, it's the first conclusion most will reach about an nsfw creator +
but had even some of those wanting to protect j!svng stopped before sharing misinformation (to where sk!z could see it) & given the whole situation some thought instead of blindly jumping onto the moral apostle bandwagon, it would have never reached this extent of horrible.
this brings us back to the topic of cancel culture, since most of this hate is being spread about baseless accusations, and without proper research about the situation or any of the topics mentioned.
again, I do not condone what op has done in the vc, but digging out personal information about them, spreading it across the web, sending death threats and possibly making them feel suicidal - is this really the way to go about this?
could we not have dmed them instead and asked about the situation? make them come forth with a sincere apology and a promise to never do it again? could we not have kept our humanity and held them accountable in a mature manner instead of making them fear for their life?
there are real people behind these accounts, people who might have done bad things and need to be educated on them, but never people who deserve to die because of it. nobody should have to live in fear, especially not on a platform in which people tried to create a safe space.
especially st4y as a fandom should know how much damage cancelling someone can do, given how it has literally happened to one of our boys before. do you not remember the fight between educating vs. cancelling? how many people then suffered from mental health issues because of it?
the topic might be a different one, but the overall situation is nearly the same. we have seen antis jump onto the bandwagon to seem "woke" and engange in "activism", but cancelling is not the way to go here. we all should know this.
many people in the dark fic community are now scared and anxious about being on twitter, paranoid that what happened to op (being doxxed, told to kill themselves) will also happen to them because of the fiction they write. because we all know that stan twitter is absolutely +
ruthless when it comes to cancelling people with peculiar hobbies. I am not in the dark fic community myself, but I'd like to think that I know a thing or two about it & I can assure you that most of these creators do not condone the topics they write about.
it's not glorification or a twisted kink, it's a genuine attempt at horror - like for example a stephen king novel, a gruesome movie or videogame. it's supposed to be a form of entertainment.
(BUT: those who do condone it need to be educated and held accountable)
(BUT: those who do condone it need to be educated and held accountable)
what I'm trying to say is, that a lot of people in this community are afraid to be witch-hunted and recieving hate like op is. a lot of them have gone into hiding to better be able to deal with the stress & anxiety of seeing all the hate now directed towards their community.
now, I do not know op personally, and I am in no way trying to defend the things they (actually) did, but I still think that nobody should ever have so much blind hate directed at them - especially for false accusations, as is mostly the case here.
in conclusion;
hold people accountable for facts, educate them on things they actually did or said.
dm them first, tell them what they did was not okay, make them aware.
do NOT immediatly spread alleged information without having made the person aware first.

and I beg of you; do NOT blindly believe everything you read on the the internet - fact check, do your research, come to your own conclusion. on the internet, the truth is only a search away. it's not hard.
you are not a "social activist" because you spread and agree with controvertial hear-say you saw on your timeline.
cancelling someone without giving them the opportunity to show remorse and be better will only ever do more harm than good.

please keep this in mind when you stumble upon something like this again in the future; stop and think. could this be true? what are the facts? did the person come forth to apologize? did they even get the chance to?
there is already enough hate and uncertainty in this world, we really don't need any more of it in our community as well. sk!z would not want us to be spreading such a crazy amount of hate, and make so many people anxious, when all of this could have been handled differently +
from the start.

I'd really wish for this thread to spread, so hopefully lots of people can see it & give it some thought - but if you have something to add or ask and want to stay anonymous, here's my cc: https://curiouscat.qa/Iinospresso
