Let’s talk about home ownership for our/my/this blightened double recession generation shall we?
I’d love to hear your takes. It’s been so fascinating seeing - as I approach 30 - the huge disparaties in who can own homes, how home ownership is seen in our society, and what it means to want to buy a place… In London it’s pretty bad, but it’s also quite grim in big Aus cities
As an engineering grad, many of my friends bought homes as soon as they could in Brisbane, n so they got on that ladder in what, 2011/2012? It was expensive, but enough people found ways to make it work. It seemed like a choice, rather than a precious only-some-ppl-ever-can ting
BUT that being said, I don’t know if they bought with inheritance etc, because we don’t talk about that stuff??

Even for my migrant parents though, home ownership was something within reach.. rather than something that only a stroke of luck will allow for.
None of this is new though… what I’m interested in is my own feelings NOW as an almost 30 year old about the politics of buying a place.

I wonder about choosing to participate in a financial system that I feel is truly screwed up?
Like, literally nothing about the financial system is fair. So I can choose not to. But then, it’s also sooo personal right? A home means to much to people, and we are inculcated into the idea of home ownership as *success* from a super early age
Part of me revels in the idea of being a forever renter… and I know some societies are better at allowing for this due to regulations and what not… but there is something about stability as well, that is incredibly compelling… gawsh.
