You can expect the BBC to compete with other global players and simultaneously say that it shouldn’t compete for the best talent money can buy. Sure - the BBC can get cheaper talent both on and off-air, but will it be as good? Simply put – no. It won't.

Likewise, you ask how the BBC might in future “fly the flag for Britain” and in the same breath ask the question whether we need public service broadcasters at all? Surely you see the contradiction? It can't softly promote ‘Brand Britain’ if it’s dismantled piece by piece.

I can’t understand this government’s ideological objection against what is one of the most treasured & envied broadcasting organisations in the world. I work with many broadcasters in many different countries, the one thing they all agree on is the quality of the BBC.

From news to drama; from radio to online. Odd you can't see it that way. Is it perfect? No. Can it adapt and change for the better? No doubt. Should you as Culture Secretary be questioning its very existence or purpose? Not the most productive use of your time I may suggest.
