So here’s a thing. @iom3 has just been refused gas supply from @ecotricity because we ‘clash with Ecotricity’s environmental policy as they are against anything that can damage the planet, including mining’. There is so much wrong with this I struggle to begin!
Firstly, where do they think the materials to build wind farms, anaerobic digestion plants, solar panels, batteries, etc come from - knitting nettles?! Without mining, there is no low carbon transition. https://www.worldbank.org/en/news/press-release/2020/05/11/mineral-production-to-soar-as-demand-for-clean-energy-increases
Secondly, we are about promoting responsible, ethical and environmentally sound mining - hence our purpose, to help materials, minerals and mining professionals be heroes of the transition to a low-carbon, resource-efficient society, not villains https://www.iom3.org/about-us.html
Thirdly, if professional bodies don’t work to bring the right expertise and ethical approach to bear, who will?!
I could go on, but you get my drift. Isn’t this kind of attitude a form of greenwash?!
