I’m not a “successful scholar” (and probably never will be if citation numbers determine that) but I like my work and I feel like I’m making some difference, even if very small. Here’s what my “publication strategy” as an ECR has been so far. Thread 1/9 https://twitter.com/echer_net/status/1325733368135372801
Dissertation? I wanted to get it done in max five years (the first year being just part-time). But I didn’t want to write “a lazy thesis”, meaning that I also wanted to pay attention to the style and language. I think I was fairly successful. 2/9
Articles after dissertation? Yes! I’m mainly trying to find interesting people to write with (like @tainasaarinen), but I’m also happy writing alone. The latest piece I did was with @jelena3121. I liked the process and I hope she’ll co-write with me again! 4/9
Journal choice, part 1: I don’t care. As long as it’s a peer-reviewed, non-predatory journal and suits well to my topic. If I have some good experiences of the journal’s review process, that’s a plus. I try to write for higher education journals and language-related journals. 5/9
Journal choice, part 2: I don’t want to write to journals or special issues whose calls are terribly written. What does that mean? Helen Sword explains: https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/03075070802597101 6/9
Language? Mainly in English but also something in Finnish because for me it’s important to be able to talk about my research in my native language. I will also have a co-authored book chapter in Chinese at some point next year, but I had some help with that 😁 7/9
What about books or book chapters? Books, no. Or maybe one day. Book chapters? Sure, if an interesting call/opportunity presents itself. So far I’ve co-written two book chapters and enjoyed both experiences. 8/9
What about non-scholarly pieces? Yes, yes, and yes! I think it’s super important for any scholar to be able to open up their work to a wider audience. That’s why I love editing @echer_net blog with @jelena3121. 9/9
