ABOUT PFIZER THE VACCINE:
So, the @pfizer vaccine is 90% effective. What does that mean? We know that 94 people out of 44,000 in the study got COVID. That means that no more than 9 people in the #vaccine arm caught it. That’s excellent, but some words of caution... 1/
COLD CHAIN
The Pfizer vaccine needs to be stored at - 94 F, and degrades within 24 hours at fridge temperatures. 2/
SHORT FOLLOW UP
The follow up period has been short. We don’t know how many people in the vaccine arm may have been exposed to COVID during follow up. 3/
SIMPLE MEASURES
We know that if study participants in either arm had been following simple measures like social distancing, they’d have had a much lower chance of catching it anyway 4/
COMMUNITY PREVALENCE
We don’t know about the community prevalence of COVID amongst the study populations. If it was low, the chances of any study participants catching it would also have been low and it’ll be harder to interpret the figures. 5/
HOW LONG DOES IMMUNITY LAST?
We’re just going to have to wait to find out, but it’s going to be years before we get the answer to this one. 6/
WILL IT MAKE THE DISEASE LESS SEVERE?
The vaccine isn’t 100% effective so some people given it will still catch COVID, but it’s important to find out if it makes the disease less severe. This will likely take months to answer. 7/
IS IT SAFE?
It’s early days but the numbers look pretty good so far. 8/
WHICH VACCINE SHOULD I HAVE?
Well the Pfizer one is the only one around at the moment but all the indications are that we’ll get at least one more, probably the Oxford/Astra Zeneca one, by Christmas. 9/
