Here’s a convo I’ve had what feels like a bazillion times over the last week alone:
Random follower: “Omg you better stick to science and stop talking about politics or I’ll unfollow you”
Me: “Mmkay bye, don’t let the door hit you on the way out!”

What I think ppl don’t realize is that while these types of comments are rude, they don’t hurt me. They actually show me one thing and one thing only: I don’t want someone saying this to follow me.

Following someone is not a gift you give them, it is a covenant you enter into. A community that you join.
Following someone does not give you the right to try to control them or their content or bully them if they say something you don’t like.

For a very long time I’ve used the blocking functions of various platforms very sparingly. I think I’ve always been worried about being unkind to people regardless of how they’re acting bc they likely have struggles I don’t see and may need a bit of light in their lives.

But the truth that I’ve learned is that when ppl act up on social media it’s not bc they want to learn, but rather they want to drag others down. No one- and especially not women and minorities- owe their time, energy, and mental health to asshats. Block bad behavior. Period.

Thanks to all of you who follow me and don’t say this manipulative garbage for being cool space cats. That’s all.

Bonus tweet!
This thread was inspired by some trolling I received over on my FB page for celebrating our first female VP elect.
I think it’s super important to call out bad behavior online. Far too often it goes unaddressed. It can be easy to be a jerk online- but let’s not
