The PM's response to @4corners today made last night's Estimates session look even more crazed in retrospect than it was in real time. The PM hasn't questioned whether the reporting was in the public interest. How could he? In endorsing the decision taken by his predecessor 1/5
to ban intimate relationships between MPs and staff, he has confirmed this as a public issue, whatever anyone might think of that. By the way, the PM is right to chide on the use of "bonk ban". I've used it myself but on reflection it does trivialise a serious matter, 2/5
which for me was the most powerful question raised by the programme. What are the attitudes toward women that prevail in this place we all own? What happens to young women who are demoted or moved on after forming relationships with senior men? 3/5
The harsh truth is that it's been customary for them to be shuffled off somewhere... out of their careers, off where they can't cause trouble. Rachelle Miller showed a lot of guts last night. 4/5
I love and revere the Parliament of Australia but it has a spotty record as a building on this account. And it doesn't have an HR Dept or anything; people fall through the cracks, women especially. 5/5
