Just a few of us here to cover the meeting between newly elected District Attorney @GeorgeGascon and @BLMLA.....
Seeing the families of Paul Rea, Anthony Vargas, Daniel Hernandez, Dijon Kizzee and many more.
“We know a lot of transformative work has been done in church basements,” says @DocMellyMel, as the room applauds the ousting of District Attorney Jackie Lacey. She thanks the families for using their pain to create a better future for her own children.
“The clock has started ticking @GeorgeGascon....we plan to hold you accountable,” @DocMellyMel says, pointing out that his very first meeting after the election is with the families who lost loved ones to police violence.
“I used to say the system is broken, but I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s doing exactly what it’s designed to do,” @GeorgeGascon addressing families who lost loved ones to police violence during his first public meeting since winning the election for District Attorney.
“It’s important to be honest with one another,” @GeorgeGascon said. “Don’t threaten to come to my home...I am here because I am committed to doing a job...the day you think I’m not doing my job - that is the day I leave and you can have someone else.”
@GeorgeGascon says he doesn’t take kindly to threats as things start to get heated and @DocMellyMel steps in to smooth things over.
Listening to broken hearts demand justice one after another, describing a callous system - a mother who learned her daughter died in jail when @LASDHQ gave her the # of the coroner’s office to find out where she was. Several young children here quietly listening to the grief.
“We can’t kick it in a park. We can’t ride a bicycle. We can’t drive a car,” #dijonkizzee’s cousin yells at newly elected DA @GeorgeGascon that she’s doubtful he will bring peace to these families. Says they just want “basic respect.”
“I am here because I am livid,” @GeorgeGascon says after the families finish speaking. He says they’ve already identified 4 cases and there will be others considered for reopening. “My goal is when a police officer uses force it’s because there are no other alternatives.”
