Okay, I have to step onto the 💿🐴 for a second:
Regarding the D*rker Hue thing, I think we need to discuss the issues that come out of internalized racism and the difficulties of writing a demographic outside of yours. People of color especially need to consider these issues.
In Matt’s apology, he mentions that he only saw the character a few hours ago.
Matt opened his email today and saw the character Chris had made for him and stepped away from the project, rightfully so.
And other people, Asian and not Asian alike, are discussing how the decision Chris made is only perpetuating yellow face and digital yellow face especially.
Chris apologized and largely accepted the consequences of his actions, which resolved the root of the problem.
After the apology, Chris still put up a tweet that was something like, “Non POC shouldn’t be telling me what I, a Black person, can do. If you’re a POC, PM and we can discuss the situation.” So, kinda not fantastic.
You don’t have to be a POC to call out stereotypes and yellow face. If you’re not a POC, you shouldn’t speak over us, but you can carefully call it out when you see it. White people, should they choose to call out racism, need to do so consistently. White people need to point it
out consistently, especially when racism is comes from other white folks. Calling out only BIMPOC and remaining silent when white folks do it? Yikes...that’s a whole other issue to address another day.

With regards to this situation, I get the anger. Asian rep has been and is
often lackluster at best. We don’t get a lot of attention or help from the media, and the few representations of us are either stereotypes of obedience, martial arts, or edgy rebels with streaks of colored hair.
Some Asian voice actors don’t even get cast to dub anime. ANIME.
I think Chris made a poor decision in making Matt’s character Asian without telling him. Matt made a good choice backing away from the project. The reaction to white people calling out the Asian stereotyping had every right to.
Asians need to be represented but by us and for us.
POC are not infallible to racism, internalized or otherwise. But this can certainly be helped by leaving space for us and allowing us to represent ourselves in predominantly white spaces like TTRPGs. That includes not writing/playing a demographic you are not a part of.
