Militant Islamists 'behead more than 50' in Mozambique.
Heinous and horrific crimes in the name of faith and ideology.
We must all unite to put an end to this totalitarian creed that is devoid of mercy and redemption. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-54877202
Even though we often think that we are hopelessly divided in America, we are not at this point. But we can't take this for granted. My main takeaway from Biden's speech can be summed up in his quote:
"It’s time to put away the harsh rhetoric, lower the temperature, see each other again. Listen to each other again. And to make progress, we have to stop treating our opponents as our enemies. They are not our enemies. They are Americans." Beyond Americans, we are human beings.
He is right. When you stop seeing humanity in one another, that is when you are prepared to chop off each other's heads.
For Americans, this is all theoretical at the moment. But for many parts of the world, especially places like Africa, it is not.
This weekend, a Washington Post columnist said "What we should be doing is shunning these people. Shunning, shaming these people is a statement of moral indignation that these people are not fit for polite society...
"It is not only that Trump has to lose but that all his enablers have to lose. We have to collectively, in essence, burn down the Republican Party. We have to level them because if there are survivors, if there are people who weather this storm, they will do it again."
I remember vividly when, in Rwanda, the Hutus were saying on the national radio to "burn and level" the Tutsis. This is an illustration of where such rhetoric leads.
If this intensified, we don't have to imagine the medieval times. It is happening in many places in the world today.
