Thread: Childers Rd Cycle Route Part II
Last week covered Greenfields to Roxboro Roundabout, this week shows how we could upgrade the existing infrastructure to create a safe attractive segregated cycle route as far as the Parkway. /1

Between Roxboro Rndbt and Kilmallock Rndbt, the carriageway is 10m wide. This can be narrowed and another metre taken from the grass bank on the Kennedy Park side. The island under the rail bridge could be shortened to allow a continuous 2.5m 2way cycle track. /2
While 2.5m isn't luxurious, it would still be enough for cyclists to comfortably pass each other. This is a busy road so as much horizontal separation as possible would be desired. Some planting to offer shelter from road spray would also help. /3
From the Kilmallock Rndbt as far as the Parkway, there is an existing 2way cycle track but the footpath is between it and the road so this should get flipped. This is the Tipperary Roundabout. This is not too bad today - just needs a tidy up and some small alignment changes. /4
Junction of Childers Rd and Bloodmill Rd. A school will be built at the end of Bloomill Road next year but no cycling infrastructure is planned to be built along it to allow kids cycle to school. Cars all the way baby. /5
Finally, the Parkway. A few minor tweaks to the roundabout geometry and it could be made safer for walking and cycling. The multilane arms are clearly less than desirable but we could be years waiting for a significant redesign of this junction. /6
So that's it - a relatively easy to build, low cost, totally segregated 4km safe cycle route that would connect Castletroy to Raheen and everywhere in between without reducing the number of lanes for motor traffic on this busy route. /End
