Brilliant new take on "I'm all for safe cycling infrastructure but..." at this evening's @Fingalcoco meeting. Sinn Féin attempted to halt this project in Dublin 15 with contractors actually on site and new safe infra being used by kids cycling to school!
The "emergency" motion:
“To cease the current work being undertaken as part of the new protected cycle lanes project along the Hartstown Road until a proper assessment has been done on the safety of the junctions and entrances of housing estates."
“To cease the current work being undertaken as part of the new protected cycle lanes project along the Hartstown Road until a proper assessment has been done on the safety of the junctions and entrances of housing estates."
The scheme itself is designed by the NTA & fully in keeping with DMURS (Design Manual for Urban Roads & Streets) so it's unclear as to what the real reason for SF attempting to stop the project is, but the proposer read some critical Facebook comments into the record

So who voted to suspend standing orders to attempt to pass this nonsense of a motion despite assurances from the CE that a site meeting would be arranged to discuss concerns directly with the contractor?
SF, D15 Greens, Labour (all I think), a majority of FG & some Indos.

I'm pretty sure the 2 Soc Dem Cllrs voted for it also but I would be happy to be corrected on this. Thankfully, full @fiannafailparty group, 2 FG, 2 Greens and some Indos voted against the attempt to stop the project. 2/3 majority is required to suspend SOs so motion fell.
This is the first project of the €3.9m NTA cycling stimulus funding in Fingal. That package was welcomed by Cllrs across the county. The way some Cllrs reacted to the first bit of criticism of a much needed project doesn't bode well for future active travel schemes.
We badly need to update our infrastructure in Fingal to provide safety for vulnerable road users. If Cllrs don't show leadership, we're wasting our time.
