BREAKING: House of Lords inflicts huge defeat on @BorisJohnson plan to break international law over Brexit
433 to 165
This sets @BorisJohnson on a collision course with @JoeBiden. If the PM revives in the Commons next month the plan to break international law, US may well take a dim view.
Voting now on Clause 44, which could see an even bigger Govt defeat.
Reminder: Clause 44 (like 45, 46 and 47) seeks to give ministers the power to unilaterally interpret, modify the application of or disapply parts of the Northern Ireland Protocol, notwithstanding their obligations under relevant international and domestic law.
Hence peers fury.
On the vote defeat, 44 Tory peers rebelled against their govt including Michael Howard and Ken Clarke (now there's an alliance)
In yet another defeat, govt loses by 407 to 148 on its plans to let ministers disapply parts of the northern ireland protocol.
