Why the Pfizer vaccine news is great:
1) The fact that it worked. After all this was new unproven technology. Could have fallen flat.
2) The huge magnitude of benefit. We were gonna be happy with 60%.

Some comments I saw that there is something unusual that the results came out in a press release rather than peer reviewed paper. No surprise here. It’s something anyone who leads large RCTs knows:
In almost all big Pharma RCTs, results always come out first by press release.

That’s the way it has been for the last 15-20 years that I’ve been involved with multiple RCTs. It’s standard operating procedure.
And drugs have been approved prior to peer reviewed publication. It’s a separate process.

Will the results change between press release and peer reviewed paper? Yes. That’s common. But uncommon to see major changes. But the same also happens between abstract and paper, & even from 1st peer reviewed paper to the subsequent longer term follow up papers. That’s medicine
Do we need to see more data. Yes. Like exact differences between treatment and control arm. And differences in serious disease. And rates of major toxicity. And long term efficacy and safety.

There is still a lot of work to be done: Manufacturing enough quantities and distribution.
And I hope that good news comes to us from other vaccines as well.
