At one Texas prison nearly 6% OF THE POPULATION has died of COVID-19.

Not 6% of the covid patients died, but 6% of the entire prison population.

That's according to a fabulous new report out today. Here's a thread w/some other 🤯 data: https://repositories.lib.utexas.edu/bitstream/handle/2152/83635/Profile%20of%20COVID%20deaths%20in%20custody.pdf?sequence=6&isAllowed=y
The report, by Michele Deitch & Alycia Welch of @TheLBJSchool looked at covid deaths in Texas jails and prisons.
These are some of the most striking findings. And notice the last one: 9 prisoners who died were *already approved for parole*
Also, Texas has had more COVID infections and more COVID deaths than any other prison system, including the feds.

To be fair - TDCJ is a lot bigger than all the other prison systems except the feds. So the raw numbers aren't the most informative here.
But when you look at infections as a rate, only Florida was worse:
And when you look at the deaths as a rate, Texas ties for third worst:
But HERE'S the thing that is most striking: While the other hardest hit systems brought their death #s down over time, Texas was much less successful at that.

And that doesn't even account for the monthslong reporting delays that could increase the death #s in the end
