@GovMurphy Hey! Concerned #NJ resident here! The #cannabislegalization bill that’s currently being rushed through with little to no care has a lot of issues! We need to legalize cannabis, but it needs to be done with the interest of those most impacted in mind.
Thread below:
Right now, the $ earned from collecting taxes from cannabis is set up to be given to police departments. We can’t allow that. Instead, invest into communities most harmed by the drug war. This means, community services like: housing, childcare, education, healthcare, etc.
Funding to EXPUNGE RECORDS!!! It is deeply unfair that there are people in our society who might get turned away from jobs or housing for doing something which is now legal. We also need to ensure that people with arrest records have access to licenses to sell legally.
Fair & equitable taxation: taxes should be levied on the grower/processor, and should be charged at the same rate other states are charging. Other states have shown that there is a rate people are happy to pay, and that money can really help communities impacted by the drug war
Also! The bill does not address if you’ll be allowed to grow marijuana at home for your own personal use. Allowing this could really help financially struggling people, especially medical patients. We need to include this.
Other NJ residents: call, tweet, DM, email, etc. your representatives ( @GovMurphy !!) and tell them that with cannabis legalization we need to prioritize communities impacted by the war on drugs, rather than giving more funds to police departments!
