just a quick thought on indie bookstores, re: the Binc / Libro fm stuff up for sale earlier: When i was in high school i took a lit course & we were discussing 'For Whom The Bell Tolls' & i remember the teacher asking "what do you think Hemingway was doing in this book?"
& i said something like "what does that mean? it's a story" and she said "i'm not talking about the story. what do you think he was DOING with it?" and I got it, right then. These books we'd been reading were doing OTHER things than the stories & they were talking to each other
and that's what got me into reading and books and writing - that idea, that you could store stuff in a story or a book that wasn't explicitly anywhere on the page. And the only people selling the books that get that are the indie stores.
you go to these stores on tour and they want to talk about what you're DOING with the books. They are still into that & they promote that & they are fans of that & its why they love books. And when they see a book DOING something, they sell it.
I still cant believe when i go into a store on tour somewhere across the country & people working there are like "page 14! what the hell was that!" it's the BEST, and they are looking for things to sell for reasons that have nothing to do with trends, they just have a crush on it
it's a huge reason the form is allowed to move forward and evolve and explore, and it's having a VERY VERY bad year. so any time you feel like buying a book, do the extra 5 minutes & find their site or call them up. It's super super important
