#brackenfellhigh THREAD 1/12

My eldest, Nishad, is in Matric. It’s been a tough year. Their last year of fond memories of experiences, friends, teachers & farewells, has turned out to be a traumatic roller coaster, riddled with uncertainty, postponements, and cancellations. /2

Matric farewell

Years from now they’ll probably realise it’s not that huge a deal, but right now, other than exams, the farewell — the culmination of a 12 year journey wrapped in a bittersweet occasion — is everything. Covid has robbed them of this too. /3

Schools have had to cancel functions. Halls unbooked, cars unhired, tuxedos mothballed, twinkly ballgowns ornamentalised. The family send-off, dances with ur crush, a stolen kiss, & instagram irreplaceables are rendered imaginations of what could’ve been./4
#brackenfellhigh 4/12

As loving, empathetic parents we got together to arrange a send-off for them. One Mum energisingly took the initiative, checked a venue, arranged a DJ, solicited quotes from caterers & decor specialists & set up a group chat for all parents. All parents. /5
#Brackenfell 5/12

#Brackenfellhighschool is no different. Same apprehension among matriculants, same initiative taken by parents to give their kids a deserving send-off. Only, the parents decided to inform only certain Matrics. A coincidence that the informed were all white? /6
#Brackenfell 6/12

The ‘ball organizing committee’ claim it was a private function. The teachers who attended claim they’re the parents ‘friends’. The school & WC DoE claim they can’t act as the function was not held under the auspices of the school. /7
#Brackenfell 7/12

Smelling the distasteful stench of racism, the EFF staged a protest outside the school. The parents attacked them with rocks, bats & profanities. The violence was committed in full view of police & media, who reported that ‘police kept apart parents & EFF’. /8
#Brackenfell 8/12

1. This was clearly a farewell celebration for Brackenfell High Matrics. Whether privately arranged or not, it was exactly that.

2. Not informing all matriculants is disgusting. And making such choice on the basis of race is even more deplorable. Racism. /9
#Brackenfell 9/12

3. The uncouth violent behaviour of the parents is indicative of persons who live their lives as unapologetic racists.

4. WC police must make arrests.

5. I’m not saying that they’re at fault. but the school & DoE can’t wipe their hands clean from this. /10
#Brackenfell 10/12

6. An essential element of education is non-racism — our kids must grow up without racism, sexism that plagues us.

7. I have strong political, sociological, philosophical views, but won’t impose these on my kids. That’s bullying, not education/empowerment./11
#Brackenfell 11/12

As my son Nishad & his friends write their final exams, & look forward to their Matric farewell, albeit a makeshift one, & prepare to go out into the world, I pray that we, as parents, have done all we can to generally point them in the right direction. /12
#Brackenfell 12/12

And as I reflect upon #Brackenfellhighschool, indicative of course of many other schools, I wish that the children do not become prisoners of their parents’ prejudices.

Love to all 🌈💙🙏
