Having three kids at home since March and not really being able to make any headway at freelance work is starting to really wear me down--no time to do the stuff I need to do to move forward. Even tho two kids are older.
I'm a writer, and I work at home. Even when I sit down in the afternoon, after homeschooling my youngest for about four hours, it's *never* quiet here, and there are always tech problems for the others--trouble turning things in, can't get into a class, etc
One kid's online schedule has changed several times, and he's in a permanent state of confusion. I get emails saying that one missed a class or didn't turn in an assignment and then have to go to them and hunt down what happened (almost 100% of the time, it's a tech glitch)
Before all this happened, the boys were great students, and were always on top of all their work. But now they're so out of touch with school, and online things are so confusing--they don't get credit for something they turned in because it didn't show up on the teachers end, etc
That we are watching dedicated, motivated students no longer care what happens. Watching their motivation just slip away. And I can't really blame them. This is part of what's grinding me down.
So I've been working in about 15 min increments. Not nothing, but certainly not enough to make any serious headway (or money). So when I saw yesterday that #Nashville had over 600 COVID positives in a single day, my heart sank.
My family is going to be ok ultimately, we are not in danger of losing our home or anything--for now. But I want to understand how our local leaders think this can go on indefinitely. How many people are in much worse shape than I am? So many.
Keeping kids at home and learning online means one parent must be available pretty much all the time. As one parent put it to me recently, "In order to do my job, I would have to let my kids fail."
