I was reflecting today on why I am doing my Ph.D. and the only reason right now is because I have a scholarship that will feed me for 1.5 more years. It's for temporary stability.
because lord knows there is NO JOB WAITING FOR ME
ok an important reason is that it has given me the freedom to subvert my own expectations and the expectations of the uni. Being in grad school is exhausting and immobilizing but it also is a tool. I can navigate between academia and organizing to bring resources to the public.
resources that *are for the public and yet gatekept behind paywalls and inaccessible language*
we shouldn't have to do this. the code-switching between public organizing and academic enquiry to social problems is an outcome of not treating education as a human right and of the respectability politics and white supremacy ingrained in postsec institutional design
We need to Read the Text, but we also have to make that text freaking accessible at all levels. Black Feminist Thought by Patricia Hill Collins remains my favourite example of how you can write theory for all reading levels.
sadly, accessibly written work is often assumed to be less rigorous or seminal to a field of thought. this could not be further from the truth. when it comes to social theory, I fervently believe the opposite. The theory that matters is the one that is already on the streets.
